Structure of Higher Education in Jordan
The Universities in Jordan operate for three semesters every year. The first semester is the fall semester, which begins early in September. The second semester is the spring semester, which begins during the final week of January. The third semester is the summer semester, which is a compressed semester that starts at the beginning of June and runs until the end of July.

The University programs are broken into three stages, with two alternate program descriptions:

  • Stage one: This is a classic undergraduate degree program. Most Universities in Jordan follow the American / Western model of the University system, in which case this degree program takes four years to complete. Depending on the area of study bachelor's degrees may require anything between 126-252 college credit hours.
  • Stage two: This is the first level of a postgraduate degree, similar to an American / Western Master's level degree. This is rewarded after one year of post-graduate study, following completion of the stage one program. This level program typically requires 24 credit hours of coursework followed by an additional 9 credit hours of research. The research is typically done in an internship setting that may last an additional year.
  • Stage three: This level of study is the equivalent of a doctorate degree. This is achieved after three to five years of additional study following the completion of a stage two program. This level program typically requires 24 credit hours of coursework followed by an additional 24 hours of research, as well as the successful completion of a dissertation.
  • Teacher education: To become a teacher in Jordan you must achieve a stage two degree, which is the equivalent of a Master's degree program. This stands for teaching at any level in Jordan, from pre-primary to secondary. The stage two degree is a specialized teacher training program that generally lasts one year. To become trained to teach teachers a stage three degree is required.

Enrollment in higher education programs has grown substantially in recent years, and there are now many opportunities for higher education in Jordan for both those who are native to the region, as well as for those who are interested in moving to Jordan.
